Crankshaft oil seal and gear question? 700

I've install the crankshaft oil seal on my '90 760T. Now I'm puzzled as to what holds the locator plate (rear plate that is between the seal and the gear) in place. I noticed a notch on the plate as well as an indented area on the gear. Should these two pieces lock together? I was forced to tear down the engine after initally installing the oil seal because of the rattling noise it was making when I started the car. Please help.... I need the vehicle in the morning.
