Return of a strange scraping noise. . .this time with a vengence. 200 1987

i know the obvious answer to this question is to get the car loked at again, but i'm just curious if it's easy and not worth the time, so here goes. . .
recently (2 months ago), my 240 was making a strange pulsating scraping/paper rubbing together type noise from the engine compartment (more later). i took it to get looked at before a long trip, they did something, and the sound went away. as of last week, the noise is back. . .this time a lot louder and more sustained. it's soft enought that it's only heard when the car isn't moving. i checked the oil, and it's full. i thought it might be a pulley or something, but a) i don't know where to start, and b) it's been raining the past few days and i don't have a garage. back to my decription of the noise: take two sheets of paper and rub them together at a fast pace. now imagine about half that noise emanating from your engine compartment with the usual, everyday 240 noisees in the background. yes, i am being EXTREMELY vague, i know. any ideas, as far-fetched as they may be, would be helpful. if the weather holds out, hopefully i'll have more tomorrow night.
