How to evaluate automatic transmission? 700 1988

How can I evaluate the condition of an automatic transmission? The oil does not appear burnt. When I remove the pan, there's no debris in the bottom, only the usual thin layer of black meterial on the bottom that wipes off easily. The filter holds no large pieces. Looking up at the inside of the transmission, with the pan removed, everything appears clean and bright. Is this sufficient to indicate that it's in good condition, or is there other analysis that I can do while the transmission is on the car? I want to use it for towing my boat. Thanks.
