Help Identifying Replacement 240 Engine 200

We are trying to identify the engine that was replaced in a friends 1982 240. The car originally had a B21 F9 engine but the block and possibly the head were replaced. The number on the timing cover is 848 (original B21 F9 would have had 960). We have not been able to see the engine number supposedly stamped on the block behind the distributor. The engine appears to be a B21 but it does not have the B21 F9 type flame trap/box mounted on the block. Instead it has a hose which comes from the valve cover itself near the oil filler cap. Any help would be appreciated..... Thanks from North Carolina....
