Do you mean lateral stability? If so, explain it to me in aerodynamic terms. Because I must have totally mis-understood the last 30 years of stock car racing. If the spoiler is not providing down force, what kind of force can it provide that would effect stability? Do you mean like a vertical stabilizer?
There are far faster and more capable cars than 240s getting along just fine without trunk mounted spoilers. The air going over the top of a 240 is turbulent to put mildly. Any type of aero-aid needs smooth air to work. The only car less aerodynamic that a 240 would be a Checker Marathon, I know, I owned one. If a spoiler would have helped the 240 I'm sure there were smart enough people working at Volvo who thought about it, and decided against it.
