squeaking noise from engine at idle--bad? 700 1989

I recently noticed a loud squeaking/chittering noise from the engine of my 89 745GL at RPMs below 1000 after it has warmed up--like when I'm stopped at a light or in a drive through. It's very loud, high-pitched, rather like a bad alternator belt, except the sound is definately coming from the cylinder head area. The sound disappears when the RPMS move above 950 or so. The belts are all less than 10k miles old, and the oil was changed 2500 miles ago. The car/engine has 127,500 miles on it. Should I be worried?
