Cam is seized in head...now what? 700 1988

I too went down the same road as Don. Actually, a local mechanic did mine for me. In my case it was caused by not changing the oil often enough, and the passage up the head bolt hole sludged up. He cleaned up the bearing surfaces, got the oil flowing again, and put on a new belt. It worked fine after that, except that the valve train was kind of noisy due to the increased bearing clearance. If it ever happened to me again, I'd do the same thing, except:

1. Do it myself (it ain't rocket science).

2. After cleaning-up the bearing surfaces, plasti-guage the clearances. If excessive, I would probably pull a little meat (carefully!) off the mating surface of the bearing caps to snug them up closer to spec.

3. While the belt is off, spin the intermediate shaft in the proper direction and make darn sure you have oil flow to the cam before you stick it all back together again.

I forget which head bolt you may have to remove. Seems like it was the second one back on the LH side ??? Maybe someone else can verify this.
