rumble like gravel rolling around from rear end ? 200

there's an odd sound/vibration coming from my rear end, or somewhere associated to the rear axle, and it sounds like a large rock rolling over some smaller ones. with the car jacked up and in neutral, you can hear a light rythmic clunking when you rotate the wheels. it's less noticable when both wheels are being rotated in the same direction. my dad suspects a couple broken teeth in the rear end, however my mechanic figures volvo rear ends are nearly indestructable. i know the transmission is shot (bearings), and i'm swapping the rotors & pads this weekend, any idea what this is ? should i hit the wreckers for a new/old rear end ?
off topic
suggestions on any specific wire type when i remake my wiring harnesses ?
thanks again =)
