Symptoms of differential fluid being low 700

Anyone know what the symptoms of low differential fluid are? I was wondering if this could be the cause of my "low speed rear end humming/moaning-like vibration" (only way to describe it)? Or is that just another symptom of my u-joint problem?

-Thanks

(on another note: when i turned on my lights last night, i noticed my speedometer needle was jumping up and down for a few seconds. I'm sure its just an arching wire or a bad ground, but it was rather amusing to watch. I'll work on it later when it become a nuisance :)
