check engine light on - what to do? 700 1990

1990 740 (b230f)

my first response was to disconnect the battery and reset the computer, since i have/had no idea how to retrieve the code that triggered the light to come on to begin with.

the light did not come back on. the car seems to be driving normal, i don't smell anything funny, everything is in tip top shape. it just... came on.

is it safe to assume that things are okay? i've driven it a good 25-30 miles since the i reset the computer, and the check engine light has not returned.

thanks.

also, for future reference, how do i retrieve the codes? is this all in the repair manual? and if so, which repair manual do you people suggest picking up?
