Just finished cross country drive in 84 245Ti/AW-71/3.91 gears... resoldered fuel pump relay and all works again. Thanks to those who assisted while I was on the road while getting a little anxious in the Arizona desert...
Two lingering things now after the long drive:
1) Lazy cruise control - it won't hold its speed; first to check I guess are the vacuum lines. Does the diaphragm in the throttle control unit begin to give way over time?
2) Flukey volt meter gauge - it will peg to the right on startup til I tap it. Probably needs a new gauge.
Synthetic 10W-30 and Gear Oil. Nissens 3-row radiator.
18 year old car was pretty impressive on the road. Held its own and was doing more passing than being passed. Oil consumption one quart/2000 miles driving 70-75 all day long. Oil temp never was much over 180F. MPG about 20; it was in boost alot. Bridgestone Potenza RE950 205/60-15 turned out to be great rain tires... drove 600 miles through the Arkansas and Tennessee rain storms and felt very confident with them at speed; zero feeling of hydroplaning.
Next time I'd probably pack a spare fuel pump relay, but I keep soldering old ones so I havent accumulated many spares...
