Can I replace my high-beam ind. with an LED? 200

I had the "spotlight in the dash" problem solved before, by wrapping some blue electrical tape around the bulb and putting a piece on the inside of the indicator lens as well. Was great; I could barely see the indicator during the day, but at night it was a deep blue, not too bright.

But the heat from the bulb slowly got to the adhesive, and it fell off the lens (in slow motion, so at first I had a bright corner, then half-and-half, now all-bright).

I'm going to redo it, but have been thinking about replacing the bulb with one of those blue LED's. Since I'm electronically-challenged I was wondering how that would work; whether they run on 12v DC for example, and whether the brightness could be controlled (resistors?), und so weiter.

Would be great if I could just remove the bulb and put the LED in its place. If I remember correctly, diodes have polarity issues, and I'm guessing that if it was installed "backwards" it wouldn't light up. Is this right?

I have many more pressing things to do to my car (R wheel bearings, front fender, motor mounts), but they won't be as much fun (or as easy), so I'm tackling this one first.
