My Cat is Croaking 200 1986

Bricksters,
Noticed low RPM resonant exhaust rattle from underneath. Checked all the rubbers OK. seemed to be coming from cat. Took it in yesterday to Midas, the confirmed it, quote $440(Australian) about $230 US for Bosal replacement +$80 labour.
How long can I leave it before replacement, apparently fragments can clog up mufflers?
Does 16 years, 186000km sound like reasonable time for cat to last?
Any alternatives, can you get used cat?
Thanks one and all.
Karl
