Tom:
I just replaced the wheel bearings,etc on my wife's 89 740. I had to get the entire hub since 89 uses a one-piece hub made in Italy. The Haynes technique is correct if you have a 1piece hub.
See if you have tapered bearings (2 piece) or ball bearings (1 piece).
