bad gas gauge in dash for 740 non-turbo 700

I replace the dash clock this weekend (you have to remove the gas gauge to do this). Well, now my daughter says that the gas gauge does not work (stays on empty- does not move). How does one check the gauge, are they fixable, or is time for a trip to the junk yard?
