Unusual smell in cabin of 740T 700 1989

After a spirited drive up the local motorway have noticed an offensive smell similar to anti freeze smell but which irritates both nose and eyes after exposure for a couple of minutes. Engine not long (700k's) recond and I wonder whether could be paint burning off new bits perhaps. Any suggestions appreciated.
