960 ignition problems 900 1994

I'm trying to chase a ghost in my ignition. All accessories work, battery reads 12.31v, sometimes it starts, no problem, other times accessories, lights, bbut not even a click from starter. At first this was a kind or random thing, once every so many months. now it starts normally only one out of 10, and at present wont start at all. Help! I'm guessing a solenoid/relay? do I really need to take off the starter, how in heck do you do that?
