Sending pump..possibly? 200 1981

My '81 245GL is my first Volvo. I like it. When the outside temperature gets hot (and that is beginning to happen in Tucson) amd the car is warmed up, it will miss and jerk when taking off from a light, and shortly after it will just die. Just before this happens there is a very distinct "humming" noise which sounds like it is originating from the fuel tank pump. Any connection? Will replacing the sending pump be a possible solution? Appreciate your collective wisdom.
