Overdrive Problem 1985 M-46 700

My overdrive is now completely out. I had described systoms in previous post, but to recap....

The car was running ok, then, while I was slowing on an offramp it seemed as though I had clutch pushed in. No engine braking. Drove forward okay under power, but the same thing would happen while slowing.

After stopping, I had no reverse. Suspected clutch, but no problem in forward gears, except OD would not stay engaged. Finally, no OD at all. Reverse returned!

While driving the OD light will come on but the engine will freewheel below the 4th gear speed, when the rpms catch up to the fourth gear speed, the clutch seens to reengage.

I removed the little pan below the OD and a small piece of metal fell out!!

It looked like part of a large (1"?) washer or spacer. Anyway, the car still runs okay in all gears, so until I get a little better weather and some time, I be running it.

Any ideas on what the best way to proceed, I'm thinking of buying a used OD unit and overhauling it myself, good idea? or not?

any help as usual would be appreciated.
