Converting passenger seat to driver's seat 200 1983

Before I go any further, maybe I should ask someone who knows.

Years ago, with help from beginner's luck, I figured out how to swap over the seat back adjustment knob on a passenger-side front seat so I could install the seat on the driver's side.

Now I want to do the same thing to another seat. But I don't remember how I did one step, and I don't want to break anything.

First I separated the seat cushion from the back. Then I took off the covers and the big plastic adjustment wheel. Now I have the shaft exposed. What I remember from the first time is having the shaft out, then simply inserting it the other way around into the adjustment gear on either side, and putting the seat back together.

But I don't remember how I got the shaft loose. There aren't any obvious retainers holding it on the end opposite the knob. On the end where the knob attaches, the shaft protrudes and there is a metal flange that holds the knob. On the other end, the end of the shaft is flush with the gear.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
