Weird airflow meter-type problems, HELP! 700 1988

OK, got a question for all you experts...

Car is a 1988 745 turbo. Just dropped in an '89 motor and tranny. Ran great for a week, ran great on my way to work this morning. Then, I came out to go to lunch, didn't want to start. Acted like a bad airflow meter, running rich (once it did start), wouldn't accept hardly any throttle, etc. ran exactly the same when I unplugged the a/f meter, basically. So, I think, damn a/f meter has crapped out. I've had several do the exact same thing in the past on different cars. So I swapped one in from another car, that I knew to be good. Same result, ran like crap, hard starting, no throttle response, etc, etc. BUT after I let it idle for a minute or 2, idle smoothed out... I cracked the throttle, and, VOILA! Ran perfectly. So, out of curiosity, I hooked back up the first a/f meter, and it STILL ran perfectly. OK, a fluke, I figured. So I drove to lunch, came back out, same drill. I had the extra a/f meter with me, so I switched them around again, no help. I managed to drive back to my shop very slowly in limp-home mode with meter unplugged. When I got back, out of curiosity, I re-plugged the a/f meter, IT RAN PERFECTLY AGAIN!!! WITH BOTH METERS!!! ARRRRRGH!!!!!

Ran fine to drive home a few hours later. I'm concerned because I was gonna take a 2.5hr. road trip for easter, but don't want to be stranded.

Anyone have any ideas where I should start? Anyone ever have a similar problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, THANKS!

Brian Flanagan
