Shifter knob removal. When I pull on my knob, nothing happens! 700

I need to replace the OD switch in the shifter knob. But, trying to remove it by the suggested of pulling upward has not even moved it a bit. Is there something special that is necessary to remove it from the shifter level. The car is a 92 745t with an AW 71. The shifter lever also has a black plastic sheath similar in outward appearance to the know itself that extends from the the bottom of the shifter knob to the console. If twisted, this sheath can be separated from the know, but cannot be slid down on the metal shift lever. Does this have anything to do with getting the knob off so I can repalce the dead 0\D switch.

Thanks again,
Mark
