no start. now 700

1990 16v 740GLE B234f

After replacing cylinder head because of a timing belt slip, (previous owner).
I did have it running. After starting and running for a few seconds a couple of times all of a sudden it sounded like a backfire and stopped.

the starter would not engage the crank when I tried to restart.
I discovered the crank bolt was loose. After tightening, it would crank over but not pop at all.

I will resume work on it tomorrow. Any ideas where to start. I think I might try to retime the belt, just in case!

Any help welcome.

jc
