Smoke, Smoke, Smoke-Part 2 200 1991

Greetings all,

Eldest son and I went back to the our stalled car this AM. Still wouldn't turn over, even on a "jump," so we started trouble-shooting per the Bentley manual. The alternator checked good, the battery checked good, checked all of the wiring, no worn spots, continuity to all the right places (alt to bat+, bat+ to starter, bat- to ground, etc). Put it all back together and still wouldn't turn over. Even put in the battery from the car we drove there--no dice. Finally "push started" it--seemed to run fine, no warning lights. Drove it home, shut it down, wouldn't turn over on re-start attempt.

For now, the only thing I can think of is that we somehow fried the starter. Couldn't see any problems with the wiring leading to the solenoid. I did check the ignition switch--it seemed to spring back from "start" to "run" although it was not as smooth a return as I would like. Anyone ever experience this? Is there a way to lubricate the switch, or is it better to replace it?

Thanks in advance--again!

Steve A
