Rear deck - 'strut tower support'? 700

Recently I asked a guy at Tweeter if it would be possible to fit 6x9 speakers in my rear deck. He looked at my rear deck and said it's a "strut tower support" and cutting it would result in eventual severe damage to several areas of the frame. I've been told this specific guy is a "dipsh*t" by a friend of mine. My question: was the guy telling me the truth or did he just not want to mess with it? I did mention installing the speakers raised up like the factory 850 rear deck speakers are and when I mentioned cutting the upholstry pad he said something to the effect of "either way you have to cut"...makes me think he just didn't want to mess with it. Note: the car was manufactured 2/90, 760 turbo sedan. Thanks.
