Alternator failure? 200 1984

I am wondering if anyone has experienced sudden alternator failure? I have been driving my '84 245 alot, even this morning it started up just fine. I just shut it off for twenty minutes and now the alternator is only putting out 10 or 11 volts. Was I running off my battery (brand new) for weeks, as my alternator slowly died, or did my alternator just give up all at once? I tested voltage at the alternator and at the battery, and I see no obvious shorts between them. Any suggestions on further tests, before I buy a new alternator? Thanks, Matt S.
