How to tell if U-joints are bad

I have had a strange rumble in the driveline, for sometime now, when I accelerate. I intially suspected the output shaft bushing and then the driveline support, now however, I seem to think it maybe the u-joint. The harder I accelerate the louder the thumping/rumble noise gets, also sometimes the shifts between 1 and 2, 2 and 3 are rough.
