Fuel pump priming, 142E 140-160

Hi,

I drained the tank on my 1971 142E so I could replace the hose to the fuel pump and check to see if the (noisy) fuel pump was plugged with dirt. I put two gallons of gas in the tank and tried to start the car, but the pump wasn't pumping. I tried to prime the pump by sucking gas through with a small vacuum pump, but it still won't start.

My question: do I need to add more gas to the tank until the pump will self prime, or did I destroy the pump taking it apart?

Thanks for you help.

Ross
