glowing red engine 900

it's about 12:30am and it's pich-black out
i dont know if this is normal but-

i just took a short drive home
opened the hood due to a funny smell

and the left side of the engine was glowing red
not really bright, dim but it was definitly glowing
i think it may have been the exaust pipes just past the turbo

is this normal?
i have to change my exaust, i know it's causing back pressure
could this be why it's getting so hot?
is the glowing normal?
