Different Model designations 700

Chris,
Could you tell me what the different model numbers mean IE 740,760,940 960 etc and how do you change a 740 to a 940. I looked in the archive for any info and I could not find any. I am just trying to build some knowledge of these cars. I own an 87 740GLE wagon and in thefuture I think I want to get another Volvo but don't know what all the numbers mean. Thanks
