760 Turbo Starting / running problem 700 1988

My 760 Turbo has been running well until recently when it refused to run any higher than idle speed. The problem dissapeared for a day and everything was fine. However the problem is back and worse. The engine fires on the key every time and then after the initial surge it simply dies. As the revs fall if i spin the starter again (Clang!) the engine will rev again before dying. The engine will not idle at all now. The fuel pump is working O.K and I cannot find any obvious problems like dodgy wires or pipework.

Any ideas ?
