744ti Overdrive button malfunction and alternator not charging intermittently 700 1990

Hi everyone;

We have a 1990 744ti with 103K on the clock. The car is terrific, and we are very pleased with our first Brick.

There are a couple problems I could use some insight on-
1) The automatic trans will occasionally go into 3-speed mode; the little orange upshift light will appear on the dash. Whackin-and-smackin the shifter will make it return to normal, but sometimes it takes quite a bit of encouragement. Last night, it kicked down to third on the freeway, we 'adjusted' it back to fourth, then almost instantly it went back to third and the upshift light came on. It did this about three times, then behaved normally. The button does NOT feel like it's doing anything, and doesn't seem to actually control the OD function - is the button supposed to CLICK when pushed? It seems to me that the OD-off switch is malfunctioning. Is it easy to access and/or disable?

2) The alternator will occasionally not charge; the battery indicator will light up VERY dimly. After driving for a while, it kicks in and all is well. The car has never failed to start or anything of that nature. When it acts up, the voltmeter sits right about 11V. I *think* it happens more often with the headlights on... but that may just be because it's easier to notice the dim battery light when it's dark outside.

TIA for any help-
Kyle
