Engine wiring harness. what to do? 200 1987

just got done reading a website that said 1987 240's are prone to engine wiring harness disintegration. is this true? i was under the impression that i was in the clear as this was a probelm with earlier 240's. while under the hood, i noticed a budle of wires with the insulation starting to harden and break. is this the fabled harness that everyone talks about? (near intake manifold, an inch or more thick) should i be worried? should i replace? (bear in mind that i have free rides to work this summer, so the car can be incapacitated for weeks at a time) also, i know they're expensive, so does anyone have plans/diagrams/etc. for fabricating your own?
