Hello all! I have my 87 745GLE with 278,000 miles on the NA BF230 with the AW71 tranny. Love the car and have done everthing I know to keep it running well. There are a few issues however I need to get addressed.
1. cold starts - it starts ok, no excessive cranking or anything, but has been stalling right away upon startup, or shortly thereafter. It does not idle too slow or anything, just seems to really sputter and cut out. It also seems *lean* on driving off the line until it warms up. This has been a problem that has kind of creeped up on the car, it was not an overnight WHAM problem.
2. high RPM power shortage - the engine seems to be happy in the idle to 3500 range, as I get closer to the redline it seems to drop off in power quickly... This problem seems to come and go from time to time. It almost acts like a switch when it snaps in and out. So I really don't know what it is... My thoughts are maybe the in-tank fuel pump, maybe the ignition timing?
3. My bad - I drove thru a big snowbank and put a hairline crack in the exhaust pipe from the manifold to the cat converter... so - that's more of an annoyance than anything, but I need to get that fixed...
4. Valve lash - again, my fault, but I installed a VX3 cam and adjustable gear in the motor a while back (yes it did make a difference) but I never changed the valve lash - I did measure it and most seemed ok, but one or two were a little on the tight side (had to fit a thinner feeler gauge thingie in there...)
so am I killing my valves or what is the consequenses?
Thank you all for your advice/help
Stefan
