I am having a problem with my 1989 240. The car is garage kept, about 55,000 miles. I do not drive it in the winter, and it was not started for a few months. Before attempting to start it, I charged the battery fully. When I attempted to start it, it cranked nicely, but would not start. I determined that the fuel pumps were not running. I then consulted the Bentley manual and jumpered the 2 pins in the socket for the fuel pump relay that they recommended (87/2 and 30, I believe, but I don't have the manual with me at the moment). Both pumps could then be heard running, and there was fuel under pressure on the line leading to the injectors. So I went and bought a new fuel pump relay at the dealer and installed it. No start. No change. The pumps still run only if jumpered. The car will not start in this situation, I would suppose because the fuel pump relay must be present to complete some circuit for the ECU.
I then checked the self test unit for codes. The ignition system test (socket 6) gave a 1-1-1, no failures. The fuel system test (socket 2) would give no codes. As soon as the test pin is plugged in, the red light comes on and stays on. Pushing the button has no effect. I can find no explanation of such a display in the Bentley manual or in factory manuals.
My best guess at this point is the ECU, but that's an expensive guess, and I'm hoping someone can offer more definite advice.
I have checked the 25 amp fuse (although I don't think the pumps would run jumpered if it were bad), and have checked for spark at the plugs, which I do have.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will be out of town next week, but will review any suggestions or answer any questions when I return.
