adaptive ECU?

As an update, I had big problems with my '89 760 Turbo wagon recently, and found plug wires degraded, fuel pump and fuel pump check valve gone, and the car had been running rougher and rougher until it died. Mileage had dropped to 19 mpg. When I got the beast back on the road, it ran well, and the first tank of gas rewarded me with just under 22 mpg. This next tank gave me 24 mpg, which is about all I'm told I should expect from a 760 turbo (AW71) when running around town.

I'm thinking that I'm seeing the ECU adapting to the new conditions, no faults in the plug wires, even fuel pressure, etc..

Any thoughts??
