960 Timing Belt Failure at 60mph 900

This is my first message. I have been reading the brickboard for the past two years. Great site.

I have had a 93 960 for three years with 108K miles. My wife got stranded on the interstate after the timing belt failed. I am currently attempting a timing belt replacement. The tensioner and pully are in good shape, but I am afraid there is internal valve and piston damage I can't see.

How can I easily inspect for engine damage due to 65mph timing belt failure? If I am lucky enough to eventually be able install the timing belt, should the #1 piston be TDC when aligning the crankshaft timing mark?

By the way, the timing belt cover sticker shows last change was at 46K. My Volvo repair place told me every 50K for a change. I now know every 30K.

Thanks,
