almost dies after releasing gas pedal? 200 1985

hi,

car is a 1985 245Ti. this problem has recently started. after releasing throttle/gas pedal, the engine almost stalls but always recovers. the rpm's drop to almost 400 but then goes back up to idle (950ish). could this be related to a faulty fuel pressure regulator. i have reason to believe because car is running really rich. i just replaced the o2 sensor today and the same problems exist (rich and almost dies after releasing pedal). any one have any ideas on what might be going on? think the richness and near stalls are related? thanks for any advice.

erik
