Chasing clutch/tranny noises... 200 1985

Car is an '85 240, M46 trans. I'm getting a metallic rattling at and above approximately 3200rpm in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. Also, and this is completely random, sometimes when I let the clutch out I get a "chirping" sound. This may happen four or five times in a drive, and then not again for a few weeks or longer.

The clutch has about 115K (mostly highway) miles on it. I've tried adjusting the cable, but to no avail. I don't have the tools required to drop the tranny, and I probably wouldn't know what I was looking at if I could. I'm afraid that the shop will just replace the clutch instead of taking the time to diagnose the problem.

Any ideas?

Thnx.
