740 exhaust advice 700 1991

I am hunting for a wagon and just found a 1991 740 (B230F), one owner, 126K. Carfax turned up two back to back failed emissions inspections in May of 2001, at 123K. Checking the 700/900 FAQs page caused me to wonder about the likelihood of replacing the catalytic converter in the near future. What should I look for on the subject in the maintenance records to help me determine whether I should buy this car? Any advice is most sincerely appreciated, as I know very little about things mechanical.
