Foolish question on lug nuts and studs 200 1985

What size are lug nuts on an '85 240 DL sedan?
I went to my local parts store, and looked in their booklet, which indicated 12 mm x 1.5. The sample nut that I brought with me fit too snugly on their 12 mm x 1.5 sample stud, and too loosely on the 12 mm x 1.25.
When I got home with some newly purchases 12 x 1.5's, I measured the threading on the studs (and old nuts) and found it to be what appears to be 1.25 mm.
Is it really a 12 x 1.25? The guy at the store seemed somewhat perplexed, too.
I'm figuring I'll have to replace one of the studs that's badly damaged, and I'd kind of like to get the right size for that as well.
