Tranny expectations 200 1978

Not really. Actually I'm not sure. The BW35 used in the earlier Jags, Volvos, etc was pretty trashy. I'm not sure how much (if any) better the BW55 was. If your wagon doesn't have an overdrive auto it'll have the BW55. The AW70/71 (and lockup variants) were quite durable. These are the overdrive autos found in 82 and later 240s. The AWs were very durable (damn near indestructable). This is in stark contrast to Saab which only offered a junky 3 spd auto for the entire OG 900 series run.

Anyways if the transmission bites the dust, you can easily (relatively speaking) drop in a later overdrive auto. Or better yet you can drop in a manual transmission (again unlike the Saabs.. the Volvo M46 manual is/was/has been pretty dang durable).
