Burning smell... blower/defroster fan going out?? 200 1987

Hello,

I have an '87 240 DL. Today while driving home, I noticed a burning smell inside the car. It smelled like hot plastic or rubber (maybe electrical?). I pulled over and stuck my nose in under the hood, and everything seemed normal up there. Went back inside, and it seemed to be the strongest inside the dash area. The heater blower fan has always made a bit of noise, and usually doesn't engage until it's on the "2" setting, but it's been like that for a very long time. Just learned to get used to it.

The fan was switched on while this was happening. Does this sound typical of a fan motor going out?

Thanks in advance for any help.

~Steve
