1988 740 brake lug stud

I am trying to replace a broken wheel stud, which means I have to remove the front brake disc. I am trying to follow the directions in the haynes manual but am unable to figure out just which caliper bolts need to be removed. Can someone tell me if I am supposed to be removing the hex (allen) bolts securing the caliper brackets or the other ones that are closer to the outside of the caliper. I tried both and couldn't budge them. Are they reverse threads? Please help. Thanks.
