Front suspension 'flutter'? 760 GLE wagon 700

Our 87 760 GLE has suddenly developed what I'd describe as a "flutter" as felt through the steering wheel when driving. Normally, there is a tension as I drive (possible alignment need) to the left, but when I do come off that tension is it as if some part of the front suspension "flutters". It's a shaking vibration that you can feel well. I've checked teh wear pattern on the tires and they seem okay. Any ideas as to what to examine?
