flame shield 700 1987

I hate to sound stupid, but can somebody set me straight? I've just bought an '87 740 non turbo, w/126000 miles, and was going over it to see just exactly what I've done, and have been told to pay close attention to the flame shield on this engine. I've been told that it looks like the top off a salt shaker, but what I found was a brass-looking thing about as big around as a quarter or so, about one forth of an inch thick, and had what looked to be a piece of flat brass that was wound around inside it. Is this what I'm looking for? Or have I stumbled onto something else? It's on the left(drivers') side of the engine.
Thanks!
