How do I turn MY overdrive on? by banging on the dash, of course... 200

I have this problem with my 1983 DL (what does that stand for by the way??)... Almost everytime I start the car, the OD is off, and the switch on the shift selector knob doesn't do anything. I have to bang on the dashboard to get the Overdrive to kick in, which is a bit embarassing when i'm out cruising with my friends in what appears to be a respectable car. Sometimes, you have to bang in certain places, almost always a different place. As soon as the overdrive kicks in, the switch works fine to toggle it on or off. I am sure it is not just the light: If I wait until after I get going around 50 MPH to bang the dash, it is clear that the overdrive is kicking on.
So here's my question: Before I go ripping my dash off, what should I be looking for under there that would cause this problem? A loose wire, I'm assuming? What color? Just fill me in as to what you think is going on here...
