Ambient and Oil Temps - I'm just Dyin' to meter 200 1983

I just purchased (won?) two gauges off EBay and I have a few questions about the senders. They will go in a '83 245 Turbo. First, the ambient temp gauge: I know the thermocouple must be mounted outside the engine compartment, but the only reasonable place I can think of is behind the grill away from the radiator. At first I thought about under the bumper, but I'm afraid of damage and corrosion to the connectors. What's recommended? Also, no wiring was supplied, but I'm thinking no smaller than 16 gauge. Second, the oil temp gauge: where is the sender installed? It can't be as simple as replacing the oil pan drain plug. Thanks for the help.
