Fuel pressure drops 140-160 1972

Here is a truly weird fuel pressure problem. Sorry for the long message but I want to explain the situation fully.

After driving for about 45 minutes, the fuel pressure suddenly dropped and the engine stalled. I previously installed a fuel pressure gauge and separately, an on/off toggle switch which permits running the fuel pump independent of the ignition system. The toggle switch trips a relay which trips the regular fuel pump relay. When the pump is started by the ECU, the auxiliary relay is in the rest position(not activated). Current flows from the ECU, through this relay and then trips the regular fuel pump relay. When I switched on the pump through the toggle switch it did not start immediately, and when it did, it made wheezing and straining sounds. Same wheezing and struggling when I started the pump the regular way. The fuel gauge registered a few pounds pressure but not enough to start the engine.

Here's the weird part. After waiting about 15 minutes, the engine started right up, pump sounded fine, pressure fine and it ran another 15 minutes or so, at which point the whole process repeated itself two more times. Today is the first 90+ degree day this year. The fuel pump is less than a year old.

Where to start???? Should I suspect the relay or the pump. Could it just be the hot weather? All suggestions cheerfully accepted. Thanks
