Flywheel Suggestions? 200 1982

Due to (presumably) a worn ring gear on the flywheel, I get a terrible noise and grinding everytime i go to start my B21E in my '82 244. After three or four tries, it finally engages the engine and it starts, but it is getting progressively worse (5-6 times.) I have tried feathering the clutch out to move the flywheel, and nothing seems to be working. I figure my only option is to replace the starter ring gear on the flywheel... so my question is, how hard is it to pull the engine & standard transmission, for an intermediate-level amateur? any tips or pointers or warnings? is it worth the $ to have it professionally done? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Morgan
